Extended Families
I wanted to share a short excerpt from my book on 'Extended Families' and the link to the video below really illustrates what I am trying to convey.
"My research revealed that some of the children within our extended family are not biologically related, which is common in many black families. This situation often stems from the painful history of slavery. Families worked hard to rebuild their lives, often taking in children who were not their own as a way to strengthen their community and provide support for the vulnerable.
This separation from enslavement, led to the formation of extended families, where grandparents, aunts, uncles, and even caring strangers took on parental roles for children in need.
Even today, in Black communities, a rich tradition of family support and informal adoption showcases how families still care for the well being of other family members, especially children and even those who aren't biological related.
Let us continue to celebrate that family is defined not just by lineage, but by the love and bonds we choose to nurture, creating a community where support knows no boundaries. (page 23 of Family Forever Part1)"
